25-ago-04 9:28 AM - Shannon Wright - Over the sun (9tx cd, 42'17'' - Quarterstick rec 'o4) - Shannon Wright incarna la ruvidezza dell'Amore e Solitudine nelle Sue Canzoni. Ti fa chiedere come sia possibile tutto ciò. Oltre all'essere tecnicamente polistrumentista (in questo nuova uscita alla batteria c'è però Christina Files, già degli amati Swirlies e con Mary Timony), è spiritualmente dotata: - una viscerale rabbia mista a tristezza cruda, una passione più alta, che non manca di bruciare per la sua forte voce struggente. Dal songwriting acustico sad-core dei precedenti Flight Safety (1999) e Maps of tacit (2ooo), con Dyed in the Wool (2oo1) e ora Over the sun scopre nuovi modi di dare carne e suono a quella strana sua aggressività introspettiva che cova in seno da anni. - Cattura questo spirito nel tocco della Sua chitarra elettrica (strumento chiave questa volta dell'album), ruvida nella distorsione e feedback, o carezzando il piano di Throw a blanket over the sun, che all'improvviso diventa un mare agitato che chiama la tempesta. Lo stesso dolore che traboccava e urlava su Maps of tacit e Dyed in the Wool, qui si concentra + su un tono da cuore spezzato, descrivendo ogni frammento di esso e la causa. L'album apre con una intro flautata sulla tastiera, - ma è un breve inganno, perchè subito incalza la chitarra satura di With closed eyes, o l'abrasiva You'll be the death, - quindi lo struggente nervosismo di Plea, insieme a quello di Birds e Portray, che chiudono entrambe all'apice del pathos bistrattata la sei corde. - Shannon è genuina Ispirazione. // Shannon Wright - Over the sun (9tx cd, 42'17'' - Quarterstick rec 'o4) - Shannon Wright embodies the rough soul of Love and Loneliness in Her Songs. She lets You ask Your-self how is that possible. Beside being technically skilled (featuring here Christina Files playing drums, from beloved Swirlies and Mary Timony), She is spiritually too: - an energy coming out from entrails, mixed to a raw sadness, an higher passion, not missing to burn through Her strong moving voice. From acoustic sad-core song-writing of former Flight Safety (1999) and Maps of tacit (2ooo), with Dyed in the Wool (2oo1) and now Over the sun, She shows new ways to give flesh and sound to that her own strange aggression/rage She cradles inside since years. She captures this spirit by touching electric guitar (key instrument in this new album), rough of distortion and feedback, - or else stroking the piano on Throw a blanket over the sun, who becomes suddenly a rough sea calling the storm. The same pain that overflew and screamed through Maps of tacit and Dyed in the Wool, is now focused more on a heart-broken tone, describing each of its fragments and the cause of collapse. The CD opens with a fluted introduction, - but it's a short deception, - because quickly, With closed eyes saturated guitar plays, as well as abrasive You'll be the death, - and then the melancholic nervousness of Plea, together with Birds and Portray, both closing with a pathos at top, beating hard the six strings. - Shannon is pure Inspiration.

08-Ago-2004 1:54 PM - Evanicetrip - Electraglide (1otx cdR, 52'53'' - Self-prod. 'o4) - Evanicetrip are one of few rare dreampop Bands You can find in italy. Coming from Florence, a young female singer at vocals - remembering an early Sugarcubes's babe, then multilayered sound carpets, moog, and fast drums rolling strong. Sort of roots traced in past by Rosa Mota and post-MBV guitar style scene. Here the Happyness is built on fuzzy riffs and enchanted lyrics of Fishly and beautiful Dive in slow motion, - a wonderful exploading load, instrumental, that gives me shivers. First four tracks are newest things recorded, by Paolo Benvegnù, - while ladder six pieces call names already featured on former demos, seeing also appearing a nice cover of My Bloody Valentine's When you sleep, or Their most brit-pop_pish Rendez-vous, and a 9 minutes song, Patti boind, best expressing Their wish of being swallowed into a sound whirpool. - Well, this is a self-produced cdR, waiting for a richer production, and then let Their creation brake free. // Evanicetrip - Electraglide (1otx cdR, 52'53'' - Auto-prod. 'o4) - Evanicetrip sono una delle rare entità dreampop che si possano trovare in italia. Vengono da Firenze, hanno una giovane ragazza alla voce - alcuni richiami della bambolina degli Sugarcubes, - quindi tappeti multistrato di suono, moog, e batterie veloci che rullano forte. Sorta di radici tracciate da Rosa Mota e lo stile di chitarra di una scena post-MBV. Qui la Loro felicità è costruita su riff fuzz e liriche incantate di Fishly e la bella Dive in slow motion, un'ottima carica esplosiva, strumentale, che mi dà i brividi. Le prime quattro tracce del cd sono le cose + nuove registrate, da Paolo Benvegnù, - mentre le altre sei sono pezzi che chiamano nomi già apparsi su precedenti demo, tra cui anche una ben fatta cover della When you sleep dei My Bloody Valentine, - come anche la traccia + britpop, Rendez-vous, e una di 9 minuti, Patti boind, che meglio esprime il Loro desiderio di rimanere inghiottiti in un vortice di suono. - Beh, questo è ancora un cdR, Loro attendono una produzione + ricca, e quindi poi basta lasciare che la Loro creatività erompa libera.

Two voices, male and female, boy and girl, from NY, young four. Something Pixies, Ultra Orange, and something 8o's, especially because of strong presence of keyboards' deep sound, as regards the mix. Sometimes ingenuous on ballads, They reach a good direction to the bright future thanks to Water ghost, the richest (in interest) episode between these five pieces, - and They can get out with a good hit as Their opening track Forces Regrouping. // The IOs - Center and Stop (5tx ep/cdR, 20'26'' - Foreign Affairs 'o4) - Gli Ios sono alla ricerca di romanticismo, attraverso soluzioni indie pop and dei riff piuttosto tristi, - sorta di malinconia di gioventù. Due voci, lui lei, ragazzo ragazza, da NY, quattro giovani. Qualcosa dei Pixies, Ultra Orange, e qualcosa che chiama gli anni 8o, specie sentendo la forte presenza della tastiera, il suo suono profondo nella scelta del mix. A volte ingenui sulle ballate, raggiungono una buona direzione verso il futuro luminoso grazie a Water ghost, l'episodio + ricco (d'interesse) tra queste cinque tracce. E riescono anche ad uscirsene con un potenziale hit con la canzone d'apertura Forces Regrouping.

03-Ago-2004 7:08 PM - Atom Orr - Asterisk (12txcd, 3o'38'' - Populuxe rec 'o2) - Atom Orr is a cowboy calling sonorities of 7o's rock (Got the green), mixed with a regular healthy u.s.a. indie attitude. Distorted fuzzy guitars melting acoustic pleasant riffs played strong a quickly. And of course You have a couple of well done ballads (F*cked up, Little Birds), blended with groovy yeah yeah and a deep rancid arrogant male voice, placed just in front of You when You are with headphones. It's Christopher Hofee after this one-man Band, coming - i read, from another indie rock being called Fivecrown. It seems this is the side-project right for experimentation and other chemicals, digital sounds and drums melted with melodical harmonies, sometimes even easily closed to a mainstream area (Shovel, Seventy). When You start thinking You know what You're expecting from this CD, on the contrary You get at Said and Gone, my beloved, - where You find a special melancholic riff and chorus which might gain a place in Your memory. - If You like Beck, Three Gut records. // Atom Orr - Asterisk (12txcd, 3o'38'' - Populuxe rec 'o2) - Atom Orr è un cowboy che richiama sonorità rock anni 7o (Got the green), mixati con una sana regolare attitudine indie targata usa. Chitarre fuzz distorte mischiate con piacevoli riff acustici suonati forti e veloci. E naturalmente ci scappano un paio di buone ballads (F*cked up, Little Birds), con tanto di godibili yeah yeah della voce, rancida e arrogante, piazzata proprio lì di fronte a Te, se ascolti il tutto con le cuffie. Si tratta di un certo Christopher Hofee, sua è la one-man Band, - e proviene da un altro gruppo indie rock locale, - a quanto leggo, di nome Fivecrown. Sembra che questo side-project sia la scusa buona per dar sfogo alla sperimentazione e altre chimiche a Lui nuove. Suoni digitali e batterie fuse con armonie melodiche, a volte anche facilmente accostabili a un'area mainstream (Shovel, Seventy). E quando pensi che sai già cosa aspettarti dalla prossima traccia del cd, ecco che arriva Said and Gone, la mia preferita, - ci trovi uno speciale riff malinconico e un ritornello che potrebbero guadagnare un posto nella Tua memoria. - Se Vi piace Beck, Three Gut records.

It's Music rich in enthusiastic production and a brilliant rhythm section: bright acoust guitar sounds, drums, - all framing twin lead vocals of two young bros, that is the two (or one?) Minds behind the name. Art pop and rock'n'roll, full of fun and a special chemistry of tunes. - A memory of Frock, as regards who's writing to You right now. But with a bigger accent for catchy riffs. Everything is propelled up, - it's encroyable it's been recorded in just three days as i read. Then be ready for a fervent contagious indie oddness. - If You like Turin Brakes, Cake. // The Truckee Brothers - Wall to Wall (6tx cd, 16'35'' - Populuxe rec 'o2) - I Truckee Brothers, da San Diego, sono pronti per il successo. Ogni canzone è un hit. Ascoltate Road kill constant, oppure Ooh ohh ooh the chicken pot pie, e raccontantemi. E' Musica ricca di un'entusiasta produzione ed una brillante sessione ritmica: suoni chiari di chitarra acustica, batteria, - tutto insieme a incornciare le voci dei due giovani fratelli, cioè le due (o una?) Menti dietro il nome. Art pop e rock'n'roll, pieno di divertimento, e una speciale alchemia di melodie. - Una memoria di Frock, per quanto riguarda chi è qui a scrivere. Ma con un + forte accento per dei riff accattivanti. Tutto brucia di un ottimo propellente, è incredibile sia stato registrato in soli 3 gg, come leggo.
