So, almost 12 years ago Peter Kernel had their first show in Rome. How magical. Good memories. I was there, you betcha. Aris Bassetti and Barbara Lehnhoff crushed it. And so did their then touring drummer. So, after more than a decade, I could not miss their return downhere from Switzerland. And, even more special, I sincerely wanted my 13 years old daughter to be there with me this time. This would have been her very first indie show ever, and with a fucking good band, I mean. No doubt there is not any other band act like Peter Kernel. The thing behind their eleven different drummers concept album Drum to Death speaks for it. Art rock my ass. Intentionally I did not spoiler to her anything about their music. I only said 'enjoy that' (and maybe and maybe I should have given you some earplugs), because I have the feeling it's going to be more and more rare thing you can attend shows of a such (allow me that) 'small' CULT band, fully D.I.Y. operating, with no more than 50/60 persons around, front the stage. In Rome, at least. Just a note, I can't understand how PK did not tour yet USA or Japan. Hopefully soon. So, me, my older daughter and some dear  friends of mine were there again, it was about time.

Fine, when PK jumped on stage, my eyes kept looking straight to my daughter's face, waiting for the exact moment when PK would hit fuzz pedal and everything would have crashed the air. What a everlasting moment I lived. Time will tell about what that meant to her.

Can I say I always been fascinated by their excellent, exquisite taste for creating t-shirts art and photography? I bought the red PK one for me.
Around half past 10 PM, PK couple goes on stage, this time with drummer Marco Zaninello originally from Appaloosa, a restless human drum machine. And also their divorce lawyer, as Aris jokes about it. At a certain point Barbara tells they used to be a couple for about 12 years, and Aris says '10 years, not 12', and Barbara sharps her knives saying '10 years, because for the last two you were missing'.. the audience got crazy about it. Not for nothing, in the middle of Amen, Aris jokely sung / yelled I WILL ALWAYS LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUUUUUUU to Babara (on You're Flawless?). Among It's gonna be great free sampler CD, credit lines tell 'they detested each other for years, until he discovered her experimental film installation and she discovered his music, [..] they fell in love [..] they started writing songs together [..] they truly believe in the DIY and work with it'. Love that. Sort of Lux and Poison Ivy from the Alps.
That Barbara who is able of a sudden personality switch going from a lost Canadian tourist in Rome having fun with Italian language, to the female declamation of vitriol blast, burning down the whole town. Her fender mustang bass is her Thor's hammer. Aris, on his side, on his cheap, kranky japanese guitar is able to create intricate and minimal riffs, obsessive twirls enchanted by distortion pedals, reverb and delay gears.
Panico! This is love, Men Of The Women, Make, Love, Choose, Take, - and before performing I Kinda Like It they invited the people to join them on stage to play.. 'is there any Diego?', a guy jumped over.. 'is there any Angelina?' - no Angelina on sight, - 'no Angelina?' - Okay, my second name is Angelina, so I jumped on stage and they give me a cowbell to hit with a drumstick. I kinda liked it! Yes, my daughter tried to stop me. No way, your daddy is going to be fine, It's Gonna Be Great.
So, we needed a last song, and their encore went for Africa. This time they invited even more people on stage, but, wtf, people played hard-to-get, I asked my daughter if she wanted to go, but okay, no, I understand. Don't worry, Angelina is here. So I jumped again on stage with my friend Michele, maracas and tamourine section ready - and other three persons. Where the water has gone.

I finally bought Drum to death vinyl. My daughter asked for a PK tote. Love to Peter Kernel.

A Day in DC with Fugazi Drummer Brendan Canty White Lake Productions https://www.inkoma.com/k/4919

Life just took over

Such an inspired and inspiring artist, a brief retrospective on his introduction to the world of Music which changed the lives of many, from the drum kit given to him by his father and played with Fugazi for many years, his humble devotion to his band mates, till the transition to music scores. Brendan Canty is a living legend for indie Music. What drives me even more crazy about him, - his brother James Canty, known for playing guitar with The Make-Up and in Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. What a couple.

Battsbury CONTROHCORE https://www.inkoma.com/k/4918

(8tx DGTL - self-prod. 2024)

Hardcore, screamo two piece band, a restless machinegun slapping you right in the face.
Battsbury, from Rome, Italy, debut record fed on bitterness and disillusionment, unfortunately, strictly on digital.
Both Luca and Claudio are from several math rock / hc bands of the last two decades (Atom Pig Neon, Norma, just to cite a couple).
Choirally sung on two voices, their 8 songs are a continuous cavalcade of fuzzed fierce, aggressively and obsessively weaved on swirling guitar riffs (Blatte, Niente Di Più) and power drumming. A nihilism fierceness with shades of black tints, not any another colour on sight. Senz'Oltre sounds like an explosive load of generational malaise that came of age too soon and it stays right there watching the overall decay: il buco nero dell'esistenza; - as they scream ('the black hole of existence' in English).
Final track Vivo Giorni, about 2 minutes long, it's a hard to please farewell. You may feel floored and exhausted at the end of this tracklist, or even recharged with the anger of witnessing an adverse fate. The soft spot on this record may be the missing of a single track standing out, and the feeling that the whole tracklist is a one whole body, needing each limb and muscle to exist and contain their identity. But here's the point, Battsbury guys don't need to add anything else to their proclamation of NO!.
